Boost your Immune System

You’ve heard people who get sick all the time say: “I just have a weak immune system.” There’s usually a reason for that! How we react to bugs that float around has a lot to do how we are treating our bodies and what we are putting into them.  No one likes being sick, so check out these 5 easy ways you can boost your immune system naturally.

Relieving Headaches Naturally

Headaches are very common. In fact, Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches and a lot of these cases are due to tension. Many people turn to NSAIDs to relieve their pain. NSAIDs are over the counter medications which include ibuprofen (such as Advil) and aspirin. We know, however, that NSAIDs have their own risks including liver and kidney damage, stomach ulcers, heart problems, etc. Let’s look at some better, natural ways that headaches can be relieved.

1. Chiropractic Adjustments
A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication. This is such an easy fix!

2.  Take a break
If you spend a large amount of time in one fixed position, such as in front of a computer, on a sewing machine, typing or reading, take a break and stretch every 30 minutes to one hour. The stretches should take your head and neck through a comfortable range of motion.

3. Exercise
Low-impact exercise may help relieve the pain associated with primary headaches. However, if you are prone to dull, throbbing headaches, avoid heavy exercise. Engage in such activities as walking and low-impact aerobics.

4. Avoid clenching your teeth
The upper teeth should never touch the lowers, except when swallowing. This results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) – the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull – leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches.

5. Hydrate
Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.

7 Foods to Give Up

How many times have you said to yourself: “I need to start eating healthier!” Probably a fair number, right? Here are 7 foods to give up now in order to start your path to health.

What is Kinesio Tape?

RockTape, KT Tape, KinesioTex, MummyTape, no matter what you call it it’s all Kinesio Tape. Kinesio Tape is extremely popular right now, and there are a lot of questions about it.  I use it in our Cary, NC chiropractic clinic, on patients at Forged Fitness in Raleigh, and on myself!  You’ve probably seen it on someone you know, or at least athletes on television. People seem to be very confused and often ask: What is Kinesio Tape? What does Kinesio Tape do? How do I apply Kinesio Tape? Chiropractors are musculoskeletal experts so who better to answer these questions!

Recurring Ear Infections

Do your kids or someone’s you know have chronic ear infections? Middle ear infections are clinically called otitis media and are usually treated with antibiotics. Round after round of antibiotics only alleviate the problem for a short amount of time until the next bout starts. Sadly, many ear infections do not respond to antibiotics because they are not bacterial. The physician feels pressured to give the mother something though, so they get antibiotics. This starts a whole new problem. Antibiotics destroy the good bacteria that lines the gut. A lack of healthy gut bacteria is associated with allergies, inflammatory bowel disease (Chron’s and ulcerative colitis for example) and general autoimmune reactions.

Rotator Cuff Strengthening Exercises with Kettlebells

Rotator cuff strengthening is a critical part of rehabilitating the shoulder and eliminating shoulder pain and weakness. Traditional shoulder exercises often isolate one or a couple muscles at a time.  The most common example is internal/external rotation with a band or dumbbells. Isolation strengthening works great for a lot of people, but for some people it isn’t enough. This program consists of functional rotator cuff strengthening exercises with kettlebells.  They’re functional because they target multiple big working muscles as well as the little assisting muscles.

Piriformis Syndrome

How many of you know someone with sciatica? It seems to be a very common diagnosis. Did you know that a lot of sciatic pain can be attributed to the piriformis muscle?

Low Back Pain and Hip Pain in High School Hockey

Neck Flexibility Exercises

People often ask me “What kind of stretches and exercises can I do for neck pain and stiffness?”  In fact, I had a friend ask me that question today.  I love getting this question, because rehab is a part of our treatment plan in 95% patients.  Patients are usually surprised to hear this because other chiropractors they’ve been to usually deliver a neck adjustment and tell them when to return for another visit.
