Back Pain Causes - Sacroilitis
There are a lot of causes of back pain and chiropractic care is an effective treatment for the majority on of them. Lower back pain is the second most commneurological complaint behind headaches (which chiropractic care is also great for!) Today we’ll look at sacroiliitis, a complaint that presents to our Cary, NC chiropractic office frequently.
Sacroiliitis is when the sacroiliac joint (SIJ for short) becomes inflammed and this leads to pain. The SIJ is an extremely important joint of the spine and since there are two of them it can sometimes be a bilateral complaint. Pain usually ocurrs right around the SIJ where the lumbar spine or low back, sacrum, and pelvis come together. Everytime you take a step, lift your leg, extend your leg back, or basically do anything that involves moving your legs the SIJ is moving. Sitting for a long time or climbing stairs are common actions that aggravate the SIJ. Pain can sometimes travel into the buttocks or down the leg as well.
There are a lot of causes for sacroiliitis and it can often be difficult to pinpoint exactly what caused it. Causes can be broken down into a few categories:
- Injury: These include tramatic injuries such as falling or chronic traumas that build over time.
- Subluxation: This is when the pelvis, sacrum, or low back has poor alignment and the joints aren’t moving properly.
- Arthritis: Arthritis in the area is caused by reocurring stress at the SIJ and sometimes a more serious hereditary arthritide.
- Infection: This is a serious cause and usually is going to require a significant intervention. Infections are going to be acute or usually come on suddenly.
- Pregnancy: As the baby grows the hip gurdle widens causing significant stress on the SIJ.
The SIJ Anatomy
As you can see there is a lot going on in this region. The red circle shows the general SIJ area with A being the lumbar spine (low back), B being the sacrum, and C being the ilium (pelvis). The green dots show some of the ligaments surrounding the area that can become inflammed or sprained as the pelvic motion changes and undergoes stress.
CHIROPRACTIC CARE! At AccessHealth Chiropractic Center we are low back pain professionals. The joints are almost always subluxated and need to be corrected. This is why it’s always important to get your spine checked. Even if you don’t have pain it’s important for preventative reasons to maintain a healthy spine. Our chiropractic treatments include spinal corrective adjustments, PT exercises, and physiotherapy modalities to decrease pain and inflammation. Patients respond very well to chiropractic care and it’s usually pretty simple to fix before it gets out of control. If it’s an infection we’ll send you to the right place to get that treated as well.
