3 Supplements for Back Pain Relief

Remember, there's no "magic fix" when it comes to back pain. Back pain relief usually comes from a combination of little things. Chiropractic adjustments, rehab exercises, dry needling or acupuncture treatment, and other modalities like ultrasound of EMS are all things that make a huge difference. Taking the right supplements is also important. Even if you don't usually take any supplements, taking them when you're in the acute phase of an injury will give you what you need to heal on the cellular level. Chiropractors DONT make recommendations or prescribe drugs, but we typically make nutrition and supplement recommendations. As chiropractic physicians we have a pretty intense nutrition education in our doctorate programs (compared to an MD, where nutrition isn't even part of their program.) Let's take a look at 3 supplements to help with back pain.

1) EPA DHA Fish Oil Supplement


This one is at the top of the list for a reason! You may have heard that you should be taking fish oil to increase your omega-3 fatty acids which improve cardiovascular health. We love it because it improves joint health immensely. EPA/DHA moderates prostaglandin and leukotriene production, supporting healthy connective tissue. It also supports joint comfort and flexibility. A quality EPA/DHA supplement creates healthy tissues on the cellular level and rids your body of inflammation. Doing this is critical to decreasing joint pain and maximizing joint mobility.

2) A Quality Multivitamin


Please take one! It's so easy and can make such a big difference in how you feel. A multivitamin ensures you're getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs for all its intricate biological processes. It's unlikely you're getting everything you need through your diet. If you are, there a lot of things that can deplete vitamins and minerals; OTC and prescription medications are the number one culprits. However, remember that not all vitamins are created equal, the quality varies significantly. If you're buying them at the store, you're throwing your money away. Do your research and find ones without fillers, with high quality ingredients, and companies that formulate based on research.

3) Magnesium


Magnesium has been called "your body's spark plug" and works with other nutrients as a catalyst for 375 biochemical reactions in our body. If you're seeing a chiropractor, it's likely because of something related to your musculoskeletal system or nervous system. This mineral regulates your nerve and muscle fun ction, and helps muscles that are tight and contracted relax. Think of it as a naturla muscle relaxer for spasms, cramping, and muscles muscles that seem chronically tight for no reason. We recommend magnesium citrate and malate, they're the most effective forms of magnesium for these types of complaints.

If you're looking for back pain relief, know that supplements on their own aren't going to do it. Tylenol or NSAIDs aren't the ticket either (in our opinion.) You're just kicking the can down the road when you take these. You probably need to see a chiropractor and get some good conservative treatment.
